Brazil Landslides Floods 2011 and Other Natural Disasters Of The Year

Brazil Landslides Floods 2011 and Other Natural Disasters Of The Year I feels like Natural Disasters in 2011 were higher than ever. More Earthquakes, landslides, hurricanes, floods, volcanoes and everything than ever before. While this may not be 100% accurate to think it doesn’t mean it wasn’t a terrible year. Natural disasters devastate what they touch because of their very nature but also bring about the best and worst in human traits with amazing acts of kindness, togetherness and love and also some awful awful acts. This year was overwhelmingly full of acts of good with people working together to get through the tough times, something that I think we can all learn from. Brazil Landslides Floods 2011 and Other Natural Disasters Of The Year I thought I would take a brief look at some of the terrible natural disasters of 2011 just as a reminder of what has happened. I really hope 2012 is a better year. So lets remember all those that passed away and the amazing acts of humanity that people gave to each other during these tough times. January Natural Disasters Brazil Landslides Floods 2011 – Brazil experienced it’s worst natural disaster in history in Rio De Janeiro. There were over 900 deaths. Queensland Australia Floods – Australia also had flood zones the size of Texas affecting over 200,000 people. Sri Lanka Floods – Sri Lanka experienced the worst floods in it’s recent history. February Natural Disasters Christchurch earthquake February 2011 – A 6.3 mag earthquake destroyed a lot of the city of Christchurch including many of it’s churches and its Cathedral. 113 people died and thousands were injured. Australia Clyclone Yasi – Australia saw more trouble with 280km per hour winds! Heavy United States snowfall 2011 – Huge snowstorms hit the midwest. Bolivia February Landslides 2011 – Landslides killed 44 in Bolivia. March Natural Disasters Japan earthquake tsunami January 2011 – Memories of Japanese citizens quietly waiting in line showed how civil the people of Japan dealt with one of the worst disasters in memorable history. The Tahoku region of Japan suffered a 9.0mag earthquake and a following tsunami. The disaster in-turn caused a man-made problem with the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Over 10,000 people died in total and many are still missing. It was also the most expensive disaster in history with recovery estimated at $309million. Myanmar earthquake March 2011 – Northern Myanmar experienced a 6.6mag earthquake which was almost forgotten by the worlds media under the Japanese disaster. Baluchistan coal mine explosion 2011 – Not totally natural but another disaster that was almost lost to the world in March. April Natural Disasters Peguis First Nation and Saskatchewan Flooding – A state of emergency led to close to 600 people in Manitoba and Saskatchewan being evacuated from their homes. United States tornadoes April 2011 – April 2011 brought an all time record for tornados with 748 confirmed across the country. Tornados towards the end of the month in the South and Midwest killed hundreds and were some of the worst in history. May Natural Disasters Slave Lake Alberta Fire – 40% of the town was burned and 7,000 people evacuated. A huge effort to recover pets left behind was very successful. Lorca earthquake 2011 – In Spain a 5.1mag earthquake, the worst in the area for 50 years, killed 9 people. June Natural Disasters Quebec floods 2011 – The Richelieu River floods never receded and the army had to be called in to help with the disaster. China floods 2011 – Floods across 12 provinces affected 36 million people and the rising waters killed 255. German E Coli outbreak 2011 – An e-coli outbreak that eventually led back to fenugreek seeds imported from Egypt was responsible for close to 50 deaths and 4000 cases. Puyehue volcano erupts 2011 – Dormant for 50 years the Chilean volcano blew. 3500 people were evacuated. July Natural Disasters Somalia famine 2011 – War torn and desolate, a famine hit Somalia due to the worst drought in the area for 60 years. It’s estimated 10s of 1000s died and millions were affected by possible the worst famine in over 10 years. The famine is still going on for many. August Natural Disasters Tornado Goderich Ontario – The tornado ravaged one of Canada’s prettiest towns. One man died. Sindh floods 2011 – Terrible floods in Pakistan killed 434 people and displaced over 5 million. Fertile land was terribly affected. September Natural Disasters Hurricane Irene 2011 – Irene threatened to hit New York City and many areas were evacuated. It didn’t hit the city hard but caused a lot of flooding and damage elsewhere and it also devastated Canada and the Caribbean. Many died in it’s path and here in Vermont I can still see devastation that has been left behind. The Wikipedia article on the hurricane follows it’s path and gives in-depth detail. Ferry sinking Zanzibar 2011 – A ferry sunk with 800 people on board killing 240 passengers. October Natural Disasters Earthquake Van Turkey 2011 2011 – 7.3 magnitude earthquakes are never to be taken lightly and this one in the Kurdish City of Van killed over 1000 people. Many people struggled to dig their way out of collapsed buildings. We wrote about a  Two Week Old Girl Rescued Two Days After Turkey Earthquake . Bangkok floods 2011 – Flooding came to central Bangkok despite efforts to protect the city. Many were evacuated. November Natural Disasters Bangkok floods 2011 – The flooding in Bangk0k continued and flood waters even reached the Prime Ministers house. These floods throughout Thailand sadly killed over 600 people. December Natural Disasters Mexico Earthquakes – The epicenter was Zumpango, Guerrero where a 6.5 magnitude quake rattled Mexico. 82,000 people lost power and 3 have been reported dead. Closing Thoughts….. I very much doubt I even listed a tenth of the disasters from the year and I am sure I missed some very important ones (tell me if I did). Looking at them in a list like this is quite overwhelming and almost dumbs down how bad each individual disaster is. Just imagining 1000 people suddenly dead is a devastating thought but knowing of stories like the baby pulled from the Turkey earthquake rubble or the baby dolphin saved from a rice padi in Japan make me see the good side of people. I sincerely hope you did not lose anything in any disasters this year and if you did my thoughts are with you.
