For people who are looking to improve their overall health, adhering to the DASH diet food list is something to be considered. It may not groundbreaking nor thought up in a lab by a bunch of scientists, but it is ranked better than all the rest. It’s no surprise why, either. The DASH diet is simply good nutrition where the only thing you have to sacrifice is utter junk food. For all people with a 2012 New Years resolution to get into shape– the DASH Diet may be of interest to you. For the second year in a row the DASH Diet has been ranked as the best overall diet by U.S. News and World Reports. Although it isn’t known for dropping extreme amounts of weight, it is considered one of the healthiest diet out there, geared towards improving overall health. Most doctors agree that the nutritional value of the diet is incomparable as it lowers blood pressure and can help prevent heart disease. Runners up were the TLC diet and the Mediterranean diet. For overall weight loss, Weight Watchers took the number one spot while second place was a tie between Jenny Craig, Biggest Loser, and the Raw Food diet. The rest of the diets in the running included the Dukan diet, the Abs diet, the Macrobiotic diet and the Flat Belly diet. Dash Diet Food List Let’s take a look at items on the DASH diet food list. Vegetables : ALL FRESH VEGETABLES are on the list! Examples: Asparagus, artichokes, beets, brussel sprouts, peppers, mushrooms, leafy greens, potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash . Fruits : ALL FRESH FRUITS are on the list ! Examples: Apples, pears, mango, papaya, strawberries, bananas. Breads, etc : ALL WHOLE GRAIN BREADS are on the list! Examples: Whole wheat pasta, whole wheat pita, whole wheat bagels, etc. Cereal : Bran, muesli, low-fat granola, oats . Grains : Barley, brown rice, bulgur, couscous, kasha, quinoa, spelt, wild rice . Low Fat Dairy: Low fat yogurt, milk, cheese, etc. Lean Fish/Meats: Chicken, salmon, lean beef, pork, etc. Snacks : Whole wheat crackers, pop corn (not covered in butter), nuts, dried fruit, whole grain pretzels . I think that while losing weight should be a priority for many people, becoming healthier in general with the DASH diet shouldn’t be underestimated. Of course we all want to look better in a swim suit, but to improve our entire health and life’s longevity is much better. I wrote yesterday about how to eat less in 2012, but I think people interested in being healthier should look into eating better as the DASH diet suggests. The diet emphasizes good eating habits, discourages eating junk food and processed foods– to which it suggests alternatives. The USDA now suggests it as a prototype for healthy eating for Americans. The first thing that crossed my mind when I read about the DASH diet is that this nothing new or particularly special. I almost feel like it’s nutrition 101, but is effective with people across the country because the word “diet” is in its title. So, in a way, it’s almost tricking people to eat right because let’s be honest, the word diet has a lot of clout with people. But whatever works. So many people struggle with obesity and heart disease in this country that if they need the word “diet” to change the way they eat, more power to them. Dash Diet Food List
