Chung Lottery Stolen The Chung family, who allegedly stole a lottery ticket valued at $12.5 million, reportedly rushed to transfer $3.6 million the winnings to various offshore accounts after being called out on their scam. Jun-Chul Chung, 61, and his son Kenneth Chung, 29, are accused of stealing a winning lottery ticket from an unsuspecting customer at the Burlington, Ontario convenience store they manage. Chung’s daughter, Kathleen, 30, claimed the stolen prize and the family was able to quickly transfer much of the money to offshore accounts before being caught. The Chung family story was the highlight example of what Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin claimed to be the huge problem of “insider wins” in 2007. Marin’s report attempted to draw attention to the issue as he felt the lottery agency was turning a blind eye to retailers stealing prizes from customers. Chung Lottery Stolen Marin’s report used the details of the Chung case (without naming them) as its shining example of an illegal insider win. The Ombudsman tore the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation apart, which ultimately resulted in the family taking action to protect their winnings. Millions were sent over the course of a year to South Korea and New York, in anticipation of the legal consequences. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has filed a civil lawsuit against them and is seeking the $12.5 million back. In her defense, Kathleen Chung has claimed that the two-year period in which the OLG can take action has expired. She was awarded the lottery winnings back in 2004 after a 10-month investigation. The money has been spread out in dozens of different bank accounts around the world. Several homes, luxury vehicles, life insurance policies and $86,000 of jewelry has also been purchased with the winnings. As for now, the Chung family is out on bail waiting for their trial to begin. Chung Lottery Stolen There’s probably more lottery fraud worldwide than we’re aware of. I think it’s good that some attention has been drawn to the matter as more action should be taken. Retailers are at an advantage and can manipulate the system. Let’s hope that this can be prevented in the future. Related: Biggest Lottery Winners
