Become a Better Team Player, Improve Office Teamwork Team is such an overused buzz word. Every resume has the word team and teamwork on it somewhere, every motivational meeting involves team building and the word team is teaming with annoyance. The overuse of an ideal can make us cynical and I must admit that the thought of a cliche team exercise or meeting makes my eyes roll. However there is a reason why the word got so darn popular, that reason is that working as part of a group can really improve quality, efficiency and all those other buzz words related to what you produce at the office. Improve Office Teamwork, Become a Better Team Player Become a Better Team Player So shrug off the annoyance, get rid of the lone ranger vs the world attitude and embrace your co-workers. Improve relations and become interested in helping each other through the work day. I thought it would be good to share some of my tips on how best to achieve that. They say there is no I in Team, whilst in spelling terms that is true in reality it’s your attitude and each individuals commitment and attitude that will contribute to the whole thing working. You all need to be committed to helping and sharing and accepting each other in order to getting the best out of everything. Disagreements that are personal in nature and people refusing to work with others simply wastes time and hinders productivity. So go into the team with as much openness and help as you can give, ultimately it will benefit you. Socialise and celebrate when you can. Even if it’s grabbing a bite together at a local pub or a day out to celebrate completing a large project the team has to enjoy being together and socialising will help a lot with that. Try and get everyone involved if you can. Lay some ground rules and flexibility. Everyone has off days so it’s best to all agree to be flexible and pick up each others slack as well as having some rules in place as to who does what and who’s strengths can be used where. Knowing your role but also feeling confident to contribute to other areas is only a good thing. Talk to loose ends before cutting them. If someone isn’t performing well or seems to purposely be doing less work it’s better for a few members of the team to talk to them first rather than just cutting them out. It could be that they don’t feel useful or they have some home problems. If you do cut them loose quickly it will make some others feel vulnerable. You need to be there for each other. Your tips?
