Songs Inspired By 911 It’s important to commemorate the events of 911 in whatever ways we can, including listening to some of the songs inspired by the tragic day. As today is the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, I thought it might be appropriate to devote an entry of Frugal Zeitgeist to remembering what happened that day and the people who’s lives were forever changed by it. The mood is somewhat somber in New York City today. As the names of the people lost rang out at Ground Zero, citizens of the city felt the weight of loss by friends and family members who gathered at the September 11 Memorial. President Barack Obama read from Psalm 46 while former President George W. Bush spoke of Abraham Lincoln. Songs Inspired By 911 Whether or not you were directly affected by the events of September 11th, it is a day mourning and remembrance. For some people this means talking to loved ones or taking a moment of silence. For others it’s possible to commemorate the events by listening to some of the powerful music inspired by the day. If you’re interested in some of the songs that were written for 9-11, consider some of the following: Ryan Adams – My Blue Manhattan Tori Amos – I Can’t See New York The Black Eyed Peas – Where Is The Love? Lupe Fiasco – Words I Never Said Melissa Etheridge – Tuesday Morning Greenday – Wake Me Up When September Ends Rush – Peaceable Kingdom Bruce Springsteen – Into the Fire Amy Grant – I Don’t Know Why Michael Jackson – What More Can I Give? Immortal Technique – Bin Laden Songs Inspired By 911 Beyonce - I Was Here Neil Young – Let’s Roll Some are songs heavy with sorrow. Others pose the question “why?”. Some are meant to conjure hope for the future. Whatever the intention of the artist, these songs are important because they capture the impact and variance of emotion September 11, 2001 had on the world. Being in New York makes it difficult to ignore how important today is in history. I know the media is completely saturated with stories and pieces on the significance of the 10th anniversary and perhaps it’s overkill for me to attempt to do the same. But I can’t help how I feel about today. New York is resonating with emotion, especially as the threat for further attacks still lurk in the shadows. Perhaps this is the way it will always be, and why it’s important to continue to remember what happened 10 years ago. Songs Inspired By 911
